Last week Sheriff Cumberledge participated in and completed the 119th session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute Leadership Development Course held in Quantico, Virginia.

This no-cost program is provided by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with the Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA).

Sheriff Cumberledge was nominated to join 24 other Sheriffs from across the country for training on effective leadership within the Sheriff’s Office, the local criminal justice system, and their community.
The NSI is the only executive leadership training program designed specifically for Sheriffs to prepare them for all matters that impact the Office of Sheriff.

The NSI was first developed and presented in the early 1970s in response to a need by Sheriffs to meet the evolving demands of the office. The NSI has gone through many iterations throughout its history. Since 1993, the NSI has been housed in the NIC Jails Division.

The NSI currently has two courses of study—the NSI Leadership Development course which prepares first-term Sheriffs for success in office and strengthens the leadership skills of elected Sheriffs; and the NSI Jail Administration course which enhances the Sheriffs’ knowledge of their responsibilities in leading the operations of a correctional facility.

"
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and learning with 24 other Sheriffs from all across the country! Thanks to this training opportunity, I was able to form a network of resources with Sheriff’s who run Sheriff’s Offices and Detention Centers similar in size and staffing levels as that of Love County. This is huge when faced with various issues that arise in being able to reach out and ask for advice from others that may have been faced with similar situations.

Thank you to the National Sheriff’s Institute for nominating and selecting me to be apart of the 119th session of the Leadership Development Course hosted at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia! Their coaches and instructors are in my opinion 2nd to none. I won’t even attempt to list the endless amount of key takeaways I learned, but I CAN say that I am eager to get to work on implementing some of the leadership practices I learned last week."
